With a population of around 6,600 inhabitants, Akranes is a beautiful town located on the west coast of Iceland. The coastline around Akranes is diverse, with many different types of beaches, among them Langisandur – one of the most popular outdoor areas in Akranes. Sailing between Reykjavík and Akranes takes only about 25 minutes.
Besides its beautiful beaches, Akranes is also known for its lovely lighthouses, which often times serve as venues for concerts and art exhibitions, while also being the perfect place to enjoy the northern lights during winter. Also worth a visit is the Akranes Folk Museum, where guests can observe antiquated boats, old houses and the Iceland Sports Museum. Additionally, visitors will find a golf course, a swimming pool (visitors can also swim in the ocean), a camping ground and plenty of great restaurants and stores, along with all of the necessary services.
